Description
Service Payment gateway integration: Razorpay, Stripe and UPI
WavX integrates Razorpay, Stripe and UPI into websites, online stores and mobile apps. An integration is reliable only when your server confirms every payment itself: it verifies the gateway's signed callbacks, ignores duplicates, tracks refunds and matches orders to settlements. This page sets out that scope, the fees each provider publishes as of October 2026, and a planning range.

What a payment integration has to get right
Showing a checkout window is the small part. The work is in making sure your system and the gateway always agree about who has paid. A customer can pay and lose signal before the browser returns to your site. A gateway can send the same notification twice. Someone in accounts can issue a refund from the gateway dashboard. Each of these leaves an order in the wrong state unless the integration was built to expect it.
Part
What it does
What happens without it
Order created on the server
Your server fixes the amount and asks the gateway for an order ID before checkout opens
The amount can be altered in the browser
Signature check on return
Your server recomputes the gateway's signature with your secret key before marking anything paid
A forged success response is accepted
Verified webhooks
The gateway notifies your server directly, and the server checks the signature on that message
Customers who close the tab after paying are never marked paid
Duplicate handling
Every event ID is stored and processed once
An order is fulfilled twice, or wallet credit is added twice
Out-of-order events
An order can only move forward through its states
A late "authorised" message overwrites "captured"
Reconciliation job
A scheduled task asks the gateway about every order still pending
A missed webhook stays missed
Refunds
Full and partial refunds start from your admin panel and are tracked until they complete
Refunds are issued in the gateway dashboard and your records drift
Settlement matching
Each bank credit is matched to the payments inside it
Nobody can say which orders a deposit covers
If the term is new, the glossary explains what a webhook is . The providers' own documentation is specific on each of these points, as of October 2026:
Verification. Razorpay signs each webhook with HMAC SHA256 and sends the result in the X-Razorpay-Signature header. Its documentation says the check must run on the raw request body, not a parsed copy. Stripe signs events in a Stripe-Signature header that includes a timestamp, and its libraries reject events more than five minutes old by default, which blocks replayed messages.
Duplicates. Razorpay states that the same webhook can arrive more than once and that this is expected behaviour; the x-razorpay-event-id header identifies a repeat. Stripe gives the same advice using event IDs. Stripe also accepts an idempotency key on every POST request, so a retried "create payment" call cannot charge twice.
Ordering and speed. Both providers say events can arrive out of order. Razorpay treats a response slower than 5 seconds as a timeout and retries failed deliveries with exponential backoff for 24 hours. Stripe retries for up to three days in live mode. The handler should store the event, reply at once, and do the real work afterwards.
Capture. Razorpay's integration guide says authorised payments that are never captured are refunded automatically, so the capture setting is a decision, not a default to leave alone.
Refunds. Razorpay's documentation gives 5 to 7 working days for a normal refund to reach the customer. Your order screen needs a "refund in progress" state for that period.
The gateways WavX integrates
WavX names three in its services: Razorpay, Stripe and UPI. The fees below are from each provider's own pricing page as of October 2026. They are standard rates and can differ on a negotiated plan.
Razorpay
Stripe (India account)
UPI
What it is
Indian payment gateway
International gateway, by invite only in India
A payment method, collected through a gateway or bank
Standard fee
2% platform fee per successful domestic transaction, plus 18% GST on the fee
2% for Visa and Mastercard cards issued in India; 3% for those issued abroad (3.5% for American Express), plus 2% if currency is converted
Charged at your gateway's rate. Razorpay's page says UPI carries zero MDR and that its 2% platform fee still applies
Setup and annual fees
₹0 setup, ₹0 annual maintenance
No setup or monthly fees
None of its own
Payment methods
Cards, UPI, netbanking, wallets, EMI and pay later
Cards, for businesses selling to customers abroad
Intent flow that opens the customer's UPI app, in-app flow, AutoPay mandates
Settlement
T+2 working days in the settlement documentation; the pricing page says T+1 or instant
Payout schedule set on the account
Follows the gateway
Four things in that table need a sentence each.
The fee is on top of GST. On a ₹1,000 order at Razorpay's standard rate, the fee is ₹20 and the GST on it is ₹3.60, so ₹976.40 reaches you. International cards are priced separately; the pricing page lists up to 3%.
Razorpay's two pages give different settlement cycles. The settlement documentation says the standard domestic cycle is T+2 working days from capture, and its FAQ gives T+7 working days for international payments, settled in rupees. The pricing page says T+1 or instant. The cycle on your account is shown in your dashboard, and that is the one to plan cash flow around.
Stripe is not open to every Indian business. Stripe's documentation says it is available by invite only in India and supports a select number of businesses with a focus on international expansion. Selling physical goods abroad through it requires an Importer Exporter Code. Stripe's UPI documentation lists the countries whose Stripe accounts can accept UPI, and India is not on that list, so for rupee payments from Indian customers an Indian gateway is the route.
UPI has changed. Razorpay's UPI documentation carries a notice that, under NPCI guidelines, the collect flow (where the customer types a UPI ID and approves a request) is deprecated effective 28 February 2026, with limited exceptions. A checkout built today should open the customer's UPI app directly. Razorpay's limits page lists ₹1,00,000 per transaction for standard merchant payments, with higher limits for categories such as education and healthcare. For recurring charges, its documentation requires the customer to be notified at least 24 hours before each debit.
Each has its own page with the integration detail: Razorpay , Stripe and UPI AutoPay . If you have not chosen an Indian gateway yet, read the Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU comparison first.
How the work runs
Accounts in your name. You open the gateway account and complete its KYC. WavX works with API keys that you issue and can revoke. The key secret stays on the server and is never placed in the app or the page.
State map. Every payment state (created, authorised, captured, failed, refunded, disputed) is mapped to an order state in your system. This is where the decisions sit: whether to capture automatically, how long a pending UPI payment holds stock, what the customer sees when a payment fails.
Server and checkout. Order creation, the checkout itself (the gateway's web checkout on a site, its SDK in a React Native or Flutter app), and the signature check on return.
Webhooks and reconciliation. A verified endpoint that records each event once, and a scheduled job that queries the gateway for orders still pending.
Refunds and admin. Full and partial refunds from your own admin panel, with the refund status shown against the order.
Test mode. Every path is exercised with the gateway's test credentials: success, failure, an abandoned payment, a duplicate webhook, a delayed webhook, a refund and a partial refund.
Go live. One small real payment and one real refund, then the first settlement matched against your bank statement. Razorpay gives each settlement a UTR and a downloadable reconciliation report, which is what your accountant will ask for.
Planning range
What you need
Figure WavX publishes
Where it comes from
A gateway added to a website or landing page using the provider's hosted checkout
₹5,000 to ₹40,000, plus the provider's transaction fees
The hidden-costs list in the website development cost guide
Payments and billing inside a web application
₹90,000 line item
The software cost estimator
Payments or subscriptions inside a mobile app
₹80,000 line item
The app cost calculator
Payments added to software another team built
Quoted after scoping
The existing code has to be read first
These are planning figures, not quotes. The two calculators add the payments line to a base build and then show a planning range of the subtotal less 15% to the subtotal plus 25%. The gap between ₹5,000 and ₹90,000 is scope: the first is a pay button on a page, and the second is everything in the table at the top of this page, wired into your orders, stock and invoices.
On timeline, the cost model's band for a subtotal under ₹3,00,000 is 3 to 6 weeks. Inside a larger build, the payment work follows that build's schedule. The gateway's own KYC approval runs on the provider's clock, so start it on day one.
When you do not need an integration built
Your store is on Shopify or WooCommerce. Razorpay publishes plugins for both, and for several other store platforms. The gateway is installed and configured, not coded, and paying for custom integration there is usually waste.
You take a few payments a month. Razorpay's Payment Links are created from its dashboard and, in its own words, let you accept payments without a website or app.
You sell one thing at one price. Razorpay's Payment Pages are hosted pages built in an editor with no code.
An integration is worth building when a payment has to change something in your own system without a person touching it: confirm an order, reduce stock, raise an invoice, start a subscription, credit a wallet. It is also the only route when payments happen inside your own mobile app.
Frequently asked questions
Which payment gateways does WavX integrate?
Razorpay, Stripe and UPI are the ones named in our services. Razorpay is the usual choice for collecting rupees from Indian customers, UPI is collected through the gateway, and Stripe suits businesses selling abroad that can get a Stripe India account, which is by invite only.
How much does payment gateway integration cost?
Our website cost guide prints ₹5,000 to ₹40,000 for adding a gateway with hosted checkout to a website. Inside an application, the cost model lists payments at ₹90,000 on a web or software build and ₹80,000 on a mobile app, as line items in a planning range. Adding payments to software another team built is quoted after we read the code.
What will the gateway itself charge?
As of October 2026, Razorpay's pricing page lists a 2% platform fee per successful domestic transaction plus 18% GST on that fee, with no setup or annual charge. Stripe's India pricing page lists 2% for Visa and Mastercard cards issued in India and 3% for those issued abroad. Check the provider's page before you budget, because these change.
Why are webhooks needed if the checkout already returns a success message?
Because the success message travels through the customer's browser, and the browser can close, crash or lose signal after the money has moved. A webhook goes from the gateway's server to yours, so the order is marked paid whether or not the customer comes back to the page.
Can you add payments to a website or app that someone else built?
Yes, if we can get the source code and access to where it runs. We read the existing order and checkout code first, because the payment states have to fit into it, and quote after that.
Can an Indian business use Stripe?
Only by invitation. Stripe's documentation says businesses in India cannot sign up through its website and must request an invite, and that it supports a select number of businesses with a focus on international expansion. For domestic rupee payments an Indian gateway is the practical route.
