What the file contains

The format comes from the proposal at llmstxt.org . In order: a single top-level heading with the site's name, which is the only required part; a one-paragraph summary in a blockquote; optional plain text with no headings; then sections headed with ## , each a list of links in the form - [Title](url): note . A section called “Optional” holds links a reader can skip. The file is served as plain text at /llms.txt .

What it will and will not do

An llms.txt file is a convenience for any tool that chooses to read it. It does not control crawling, which is still done through robots.txt, and it does not change how search engines rank or how AI systems choose sources. Google has said it does not use the file, and published log data shows AI crawlers rarely ask for it. Add one because it costs a few minutes, not because it will change your visibility. What does affect visibility in AI answers

The factors with published support are ordinary ones: pages that search crawlers can reach and index, answers stated plainly near the top of the page, figures with their sources, and mentions of your business on other sites people trust. What is an llms.txt file?

A markdown file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt, that gives a short summary of the site and a list of links to its most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 as a way to help language models find a site's key content without crawling all of it.

Will adding llms.txt get my site cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI?

There is no evidence that it will. Google has said it does not use llms.txt, no major AI company documents using it, and a published log study of over a hundred thousand domains found the file is almost never requested by AI crawlers. It is cheap to add and harmless, so treat it as housekeeping.

Is anything I type sent to WavX?

No. The generator and the checker run entirely in your browser. Nothing is submitted, stored or fetched, and the check does not visit the links you enter.
