Description
Service Need a Shopify feature built? Custom Shopify functionality
Most things Shopify does not do out of the box can be added in one of four ways: a theme change, an existing App Store app, a Shopify Function, or an integration through the Admin API. Which one applies depends on where the rule has to be enforced and on your plan. WavX identifies the route first, then quotes for the build.

The four places a Shopify feature can live
"Can Shopify do this?" is rarely a yes-or-no question. The useful question is where the feature has to live, because that decides the effort, the plan you need and who can maintain it afterwards.
Layer
Good for
Cannot do
Theme change
Anything the shopper sees before checkout: layouts, pickers, messages, cart behaviour
Enforce a rule. A determined shopper can bypass anything that exists only in the browser
App Store app
Common needs that many stores share
Fit a rule that is specific to your business
Shopify Function
Rules Shopify must enforce on its own servers: discounts, payment methods, delivery options, validation
Change how checkout looks; call your server while it runs, on most plans
Admin API integration
Moving data between Shopify and another system; tools for staff
Change what the shopper sees at checkout
Many features use two layers. A minimum-order rule, for example, is shown as a message in the cart by the theme and enforced by a validation Function, so that it holds even when the cart page is skipped.
Feature requests and how each is built
The table lists requests merchants make often and the usual route for each, as of October 2026. It describes how the feature is built on Shopify's platform; it is not a list of delivered projects. Effort is relative: small is configuration or a contained theme change, medium is a new theme section or an app with one job, large is an app with its own backend, data and admin screen.
Request
Usual route
Effort
What to know
Fixed bundles and multipacks
Shopify's own Bundles app, listed as free
Small
Check this before paying for anything else
Build-your-own box, mix and match
An app using the Cart Transform Function to merge chosen items into one bundle line
Large
Overriding a line's price, title or image is limited to Plus and development stores
"Buy 2, get 1" or a flat amount off
Shopify's built-in discounts: amount off, buy X get Y, free shipping, as a code or automatic
No development needed
Tiered discounts, discounts by customer tag or cart mix
A Discount Function
Medium
Your own Function needs Plus; other plans need an App Store app that contains one
Wholesale or customer-specific prices
Shopify B2B catalogues
Small to medium
Available on all plans, with up to 3 active catalogues on Basic, Grow and Advanced
Delivery-date or time-slot picker
A cart-page picker that saves the choice as a cart attribute, which then shows on the order in the admin
Placing the picker inside checkout needs a checkout UI extension, which is Plus only for those steps
Pin code serviceability check on the product page
A theme block that looks the pin code up, either in data stored in Shopify or through an app proxy to a courier's API
The serviceable list has to come from your courier or aggregator
Hide cash on delivery above a value or for some pin codes
A Payment Customization Function, which can hide, rename and reorder payment methods
Same plan rule as discounts
Hide, rename or reorder shipping options
A Delivery Customization Function
Minimum order value, quantity limits per order
A Cart and Checkout Validation Function, plus a cart message in the theme
The theme message alone is not enforcement
Engraving text, gift message per item
Line item properties added by the product form
They appear on the order details page for the packing team
Size chart, ingredients, care instructions per product
Metafields shown through a theme block
The merchant edits the values in the admin, not in code
Store locator, lookbook, brand FAQs
Metaobjects with their own templates
A metaobject is a record type you define yourself
Filters, search synonyms, "pairs well with"
Shopify's Search & Discovery app, listed as free
Configuration, not development
Orders into Tally or an ERP, stock back to Shopify
A custom app using webhooks and the Admin API
See Shopify to Tally
Tag orders, alert staff, route exceptions
A Shopify Flow workflow
Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus
Two notes for Indian stores. Cash on delivery in Shopify is a manual payment method, so COD orders are marked unpaid until someone marks them paid; any COD rule or reconciliation has to account for that. And if a feature involves recurring payments, check the gateway first: Razorpay's documentation for its Shopify integration lists Subscriptions as not supported, as of October 2026. The Shopify subscriptions page covers the options.
What depends on your plan
Three rules account for most of the surprises.
Functions in your own app need Plus. Shopify states that stores on any plan can use public App Store apps that contain Functions, and that only Plus stores can use custom apps that contain them. On Basic, Grow or Advanced, checkout-time logic therefore comes from an existing app or is moved earlier, into the cart.
Checkout UI on the main steps needs Plus. Checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps are available only on Plus. The cart page is open to every plan, which is why delivery pickers and gift notes usually live there.
B2B does not need Plus. Shopify's help centre states that B2B is available on all plans, with limits such as the catalogue cap above and a few features reserved for Plus. Wholesale pricing may therefore be configuration, not development. See B2B and wholesale on Shopify .
The details of each checkout tool are on the checkout customisation page.
How WavX scopes a feature request
One sentence per rule. "Customers tagged wholesale see catalogue prices and can pay on credit." Vague requests produce vague quotes.
Find the layer. Does the rule only need to be shown, or must Shopify enforce it? Does data leave Shopify? The answers place the feature in the first table.
Check the plan and the existing apps. If a setting or a free Shopify app covers it, WavX says so and the job becomes configuration.
Build it so it survives updates. Theme features are added as their own sections and blocks instead of edits inside existing files. Shopify carries theme editor settings across a theme update and includes code edits only where they do not conflict, so isolated code is the code that survives.
Test with real settings. Features near checkout are tested with the store's actual payment methods, shipping zones, discount codes and a COD order, on a duplicate theme or a development store.
Hand over. The merchant receives the code, a note on where each setting lives, and what to check after a theme or app update.
Where the feature needs a backend, the work follows the process on the custom Shopify app page.
When an existing app is the right answer
More often than merchants expect. Use an App Store app, and do not commission a build, when:
The request is in the table above with "listed as free" beside it.
The feature is a commodity: reviews, wishlists, back-in-stock alerts, pop-ups, shipping labels.
You are on Basic, Grow or Advanced and the rule has to run at checkout. Shopify gives you no other route.
You are still testing whether shoppers want the feature. Rent it for three months first.
A custom build is worth quoting when the app that almost fits forces a change in how you sell, when three or four apps are each doing a slice of one job, or when the feature depends on your own data. Each extra app can also add code to the storefront, and installed apps are one of the three things Shopify names as affecting store speed. See why a Shopify store is slow . The post on custom apps against App Store apps goes through the trade-off.
What cannot be built
It is better to hear these before scoping.
The checkout page's own markup. Checkout UI extensions run in a sandbox with Shopify's components and no access to the page's HTML or to payment details.
More than three options on a product. A product can have up to three options and up to 2,048 variants. Anything beyond that is a workaround using line item properties or separate products.
A different URL structure. Paths such as /products and /collections are fixed by Shopify.
Enforcement from the theme alone. If a rule matters commercially, it needs a Function or a server-side check.
If your requirement is not in the table, send it through the custom requirements page. WavX will reply with the layer it belongs to and whether an existing app already covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Shopify does not have the feature I need. Can it be built?
Usually, yes. The first question is where the feature lives: in the theme, in an app, in a Shopify Function at checkout, or in an integration with another system. A few things cannot be built on any plan, such as editing the checkout page's HTML or giving a product more than three options without a workaround.
Do I need Shopify Plus for custom features?
Not for most of them. Theme features, admin tools and API integrations work on every plan. Plus is needed when your own code has to run inside checkout: custom apps containing Shopify Functions, and checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps.
Will a custom feature break when my theme updates?
It depends on how it was built. A feature added as its own section, block or app block survives a theme update far better than edits scattered through the theme's existing files. Shopify carries theme editor settings across an update, and includes code edits only when they do not conflict with the new version.
How long does a feature take?
It depends on the layer. A contained theme change is a small job, a feature with its own app and admin screen is a larger one, and anything touching checkout needs testing against real payment and shipping settings. We give a timeline with the quote, after scoping.
How much does a custom Shopify feature cost?
It is quoted after scoping. We do not publish a fixed price for Shopify feature work, because the same request can be a setting on one store and an app on another. Send the requirement in one or two sentences and we will tell you which it is.
