Description

Service Custom Shopify theme development

A custom Shopify theme is the storefront code, written in Liquid, that controls every page before checkout. WavX builds themes on Shopify's Online Store 2.0 structure, so the merchant can rearrange pages in the theme editor without a developer. For a new store with a standard catalogue, a Theme Store theme is usually the better first purchase.

Discuss a Shopify requirement Last updated 2 October 2026

Three levels of theme work

"Custom theme" covers three different jobs. Knowing which one you need is most of the scoping.

Level

What changes

Suits

Updates afterwards

Configure a bought theme

Settings, content, colours and fonts in the theme editor; no code

New stores, standard catalogues

Shopify carries theme editor customisations across theme updates

Extend a bought theme

New sections and blocks added in code alongside the theme's own

Stores that need a few things the theme lacks

Code edits are included in an update only if they do not conflict; otherwise they are copied across by hand

Build a theme from a design

Every template, section and block written for the brand

Stores where design or buying flow is a competitive point

No vendor updates. The theme is yours to maintain

WavX does all three. The second is often the best value: keep a well-maintained theme, and add the handful of sections that make the store yours.

How an Online Store 2.0 theme is put together

A current Shopify theme is a set of files with fixed roles. The structure matters to a merchant because it decides what can be edited without a developer.

Part

What it does

Layout

The frame around every page: the repeated elements such as header and footer

Templates

Control what a page type shows. JSON templates are wrappers that list sections; Liquid templates contain code

Sections

Reusable modules of content a merchant can add to JSON templates

Blocks

Smaller modules inside a section that can be added, removed and reordered

Section groups

Let the merchant add and reorder sections in the header and footer areas

Snippets

Reusable pieces of Liquid code

Config

JSON files holding the settings the theme editor exposes

Assets and locales

CSS, JavaScript and images; and the translated text for each language

Blocks come in three kinds: theme blocks, which are their own files and reusable across sections; section blocks, which belong to one section; and app blocks, which installed apps provide.

Shopify sets limits that shape a design. As of October 2026, a JSON template can render up to 25 sections, each section can hold up to 50 blocks, a theme can contain up to 1,000 JSON templates, and a theme can contain at most 300 theme blocks. A landing page designed as forty stacked modules has to be planned differently.

Requests that need logic as well as layout are covered on the custom Shopify features page.

Why app code should not be pasted into the theme

Shopify's theme app extensions let an app add its widget as a block without editing theme code, which Shopify says decreases the risk of breaking changes to the theme. WavX places app widgets as app blocks or app embeds wherever the app supports it. Code pasted into theme files can stay behind after the app is uninstalled and keep loading on every page, which is why a speed audit looks for it.

How WavX builds a theme

Design in Figma, against real content. Real product names, the longest title, a product with no image, a collection with two items and one with two hundred.

List the templates and sections. The quote is based on this list. It also tells the merchant exactly what they will be able to edit.

Build with Shopify's tooling. Shopify CLI for local development, Theme Check as the linter, and the theme code in a Git repository connected through Shopify's GitHub integration, so every change is recorded.

Expose settings, not code. Each section's text, images, colours and options become theme editor settings with sensible defaults.

Build for speed from the first section. See the next heading.

Test on an unpublished copy. The theme is reviewed on the live store's data as an unpublished theme: every template, mobile first, with installed apps active.

Publish and hand over. The merchant receives the repository, a short guide to each section's settings, and a note on what to recheck when an app is added. The Shopify launch checklist covers the rest of going live.

Speed is decided while the theme is written

Shopify requires a theme to reach a minimum average Lighthouse performance score of 60 across the home, product and collection pages before it is accepted into the Theme Store. That is a floor, not a target, and a custom theme has no reason to fall below it. The practices Shopify documents are the ones WavX follows:

Images are output with the image_url and image_tag filters, so Shopify's CDN serves a size and format suited to the device. Shopify selects a format such as WebP or AVIF automatically where the browser supports it.

The main image at the top of the page is never lazy-loaded and is marked as high priority. Images further down are lazy-loaded.

Scripts that are not needed for the first paint are deferred.

Fonts and assets are served from the theme's own assets folder on Shopify's CDN, not from other domains.

After launch, the number that matters is not the Lighthouse score but real-user data. Shopify's admin has web performance reports built from visitors' actual page loads, and WavX reads those before and after a theme change. No score or ranking is promised: Shopify names installed apps and third-party code such as tag managers, alongside the theme, as the things that affect a store's speed, and a theme controls only one of the three. Existing stores with a speed problem should start with Shopify speed optimisation .

When a Theme Store theme is the right answer

A custom theme is the wrong first purchase when:

The store is new. You do not yet know which pages shoppers use. Launch on a bought theme and spend the difference on photography and product content.

The catalogue is conventional. Standard product pages, standard collections, a blog. Bought themes do this well.

Nobody will maintain it. A vendor's theme receives fixes. A custom theme receives them only when you pay for them.

The real complaint is speed. Apps and third-party scripts are as likely a cause as the theme, and removing them costs far less than a rebuild. Measure first.

A custom build is justified when the brand's design cannot be reached by configuration, when the buying flow is unusual (configurable products, bundles built by the shopper, wholesale and retail in one store), or when years of edits have left a bought theme that nobody dares update.

What a theme cannot do

Change checkout. Checkout is styled in Shopify's checkout and accounts editor, and extended through apps.

Enforce a business rule. A minimum order shown by the theme can be bypassed. Rules need a Shopify Function or an app.

Change Shopify's URL structure. Product and collection paths are fixed by the platform.

Fix slow apps. The theme can load an app's code later, but it cannot make that code smaller.

Cost

WavX has no fixed price for theme work; it is quoted after scoping, from the list of templates and sections. For planning, WavX's published Shopify store setup cost guide prints ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 for adjusting an off-the-shelf theme and ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 for custom design work. Those are planning ranges, not quotes. The custom Shopify theme development cost guide breaks the number down by template count, custom sections and design.

Theme development is one part of Shopify development at WavX.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a custom theme, or is a Theme Store theme enough?

For most new stores, a Theme Store theme with careful configuration is enough. A custom theme is worth paying for when the design or the buying flow is part of how you compete, or when the workarounds in a bought theme have started to slow the store and every small change needs a developer.

Can I edit the store myself after a custom theme is built?

Yes, if it is built properly. Every section and block should expose its text, images and options as settings, so you can add, remove and reorder content in Shopify's theme editor. A custom theme that needs a developer to change a banner has been built wrongly.

Can a theme change the checkout?

No. The theme controls the storefront up to the cart. Checkout is styled in Shopify's checkout and accounts editor and extended through apps, and changes to the information, shipping and payment steps need Shopify Plus.

Will a custom theme make my store faster?

It removes one common cause of slowness, which is a general-purpose theme carrying features you do not use. It cannot promise a score, because apps and third-party scripts also affect speed. We measure with real-user data before and after instead of quoting a number in advance.

How much does a custom Shopify theme cost in India?

It is quoted after scoping, based on the number of distinct page templates and custom sections. Our published Shopify store setup guide prints planning ranges of ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 for adjusting an off-the-shelf theme and ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 for custom design work.

What happens when Shopify updates its platform?

A fully custom theme does not receive updates from a theme vendor, so someone has to maintain it. In practice that means checking the theme when Shopify changes a storefront feature and when you install a new app.
