Integration Shopify and Shiprocket integration: beyond the standard app

Shiprocket's own Shopify app syncs orders, books shipments across its courier partners, tracks them and notifies buyers, and for many stores it is all that is needed. Merchants hire a developer for what sits around it: confirming cash-on-delivery orders before they ship, acting on failed deliveries inside Shiprocket's 24 to 48 hour window, courier choice by their own rules, and status flowing back into Shopify and other systems.

Discuss an integration Last updated 2 October 2026

What the standard app does

Shiprocket publishes "Shiprocket: eCommerce Shipping" on the Shopify App Store. As read on 2 October 2026, the listing describes:

automatic sync of Shopify orders into Shiprocket;

one interface across more than 25 courier partners, with labels, pickups, tracking, and COD and prepaid handling;

a courier recommendation engine;

buyer notifications by email, WhatsApp and SMS;

plans listed as Free, Basic ($3 a month), Advance ($6) and Pro ($9), billed in US dollars.

If your store ships every order the same way and returns are not hurting margins, install the app, configure it, and stop there. Nothing below is needed.

Where it stops, and what gets built

The gaps merchants pay to close are rarely about getting a label printed. They are about money lost on parcels that come back.

Need

What the standard app gives

What a custom layer adds

Stop fake or impulse COD orders

Ships what it receives

Hold each COD order, ask the buyer to confirm on WhatsApp, release only confirmed orders

Block COD where couriers do not serve it

Courier choice after the order

A serviceability check (pickup pincode, delivery pincode, weight, COD flag) before COD is offered or accepted

Act on failed deliveries

NDRs visible in the Shiprocket panel

Same-day WhatsApp to the buyer; their answer sent to Shiprocket as a re-attempt with corrected phone or address

Courier by your own rules

Shiprocket's recommendation

Rules such as "fragile goods to courier X", "COD above a value to courier Y", using the rates and ratings the serviceability call returns

Status in your other systems

Tracking in Shiprocket and Shopify

Delivered, returned and COD-remitted status written to your ERP, accounts or CRM

Reporting

Shiprocket's reports

Return rate by pincode, courier, product and payment method, in one view

Data flow with COD confirmation and NDR handling

Shopify: orders/create (signed webhook)

Your service ── prepaid? ───────────────▶ release to Shiprocket

└─ COD ── serviceability check (COD allowed for this pincode?)

── WhatsApp template: "Confirm your order #1042?" [Yes] [Cancel]

├─ Yes ──────────▶ release to Shiprocket ──▶ courier + AWB

├─ Cancel ───────▶ cancel in Shopify, restock

└─ no reply ─────▶ call list after a set time

Shiprocket ── tracking webhook ──▶ your service ──▶ Shopify fulfilment status, buyer message

Shiprocket ── NDR event ─────────▶ your service ──▶ WhatsApp to buyer ("We missed you. Pick a date")

──▶ buyer replies ──▶ NDR action: re-attempt (date, phone, address)

──▶ no reply in time ──▶ support queue before the window closes

Notes

Order name (#1042)

order_id (your reference)

Shiprocket returns its own order ID and a shipment_id ; store both

Payment gateway or manual method

Payment method: COD or prepaid

Shopify marks manual-payment orders, such as COD, as unpaid until someone marks them paid

Shipping address, pincode, phone

Delivery address fields

Phone normalised to ten digits; pincode checked for serviceability

Line items: title, SKU, quantity, price

Order items

SKU must match what the warehouse picks

Product weight and package size

Weight and dimensions

From product data, not guessed; courier charges depend on them

Fulfilment and tracking number

awb_code , courier name

Written back to Shopify so the buyer sees tracking

Order tags

Hold and confirmation state

Such as "cod-pending", "cod-confirmed", "ndr-open"

Limits and gotchas

How orders reach Shiprocket decides how a hold works. If the app pulls every new order automatically, holding COD orders needs either a setting on the Shiprocket side or pushing orders through Shiprocket's API instead of the app. This is checked on your account first.

The NDR window is short. Shiprocket's documentation gives the window shown in the dashboard, typically 24 to 48 hours. A re-attempt date must be after today, within the window and not a Sunday.

Pincode changes are not allowed on an NDR. Phone and address lines can change; the pincode cannot.

WhatsApp needs approved templates and opt-in. Confirmation and NDR messages are sent first by the business, outside any 24-hour customer service window the buyer has opened, so they use pre-approved template messages, which Meta charges per delivered message. See WhatsApp Business API integration .

Shopify webhooks must be answered within five seconds. The confirmation flow runs after the reply, from a queue.

Two shipping apps, one order. If the standard app and a custom push both send the same order, Shiprocket gets it twice. Only one route may create shipments.

What WavX builds

WavX builds the layer around Shiprocket for Shopify stores: COD confirmation on WhatsApp with a hold and release, a serviceability check before COD, NDR handling that messages the buyer and sends the action back in time, courier rules, status written back to Shopify and onward to your other systems, and a returns report. For stores not on Shopify, the same pieces are on Shiprocket integration . The business side of cutting returns is covered in how to reduce COD returns .

Effort band

Quoted after scoping, since it depends on which of the pieces above you need. For planning, the software cost estimator carries third-party integrations as a ₹60,000 line item inside a larger build. Shiprocket's plan and courier charges, and WhatsApp message charges, are paid to those providers.

When to stay with the app alone

If most orders are prepaid, returns are low, or volume is small enough that someone can call each COD buyer, the standard app plus manual checks is the cheaper answer. Measure your return rate by payment method for a month first; if COD returns are not a real cost, there is nothing to build. More on Shopify-side options is on Shopify integrations .

Frequently asked questions

Is the Shiprocket Shopify app enough on its own?

For many stores, yes. As of October 2026 its App Store listing describes automatic order sync, labels, pickups, tracking, COD and prepaid handling, courier recommendation and buyer notifications, with a free plan. Install it first. Custom work is worth it only when a specific gap costs money, most often COD orders that come back.

How does COD confirmation work with Shiprocket?

A COD order is held when it is placed, the buyer gets a WhatsApp message asking them to confirm, and only confirmed orders are sent to Shiprocket for a courier and AWB. Unconfirmed orders go to a call list. How the hold is applied depends on how orders reach Shiprocket on your account, which we check before building.

What is an NDR and why does speed matter?

A non-delivery report is raised when a delivery attempt fails. Shiprocket's API documentation says to respond within the window shown in the dashboard, typically 24 to 48 hours, after which the shipment returns to origin automatically. A same-day WhatsApp to the buyer, with their answer sent back as a re-attempt, is the usual fix.

Can you change the delivery pincode on an NDR?

No. Shiprocket's NDR workflow allows an updated phone number and address lines with a re-attempt, but not a new pincode. A buyer who needs delivery to a different pincode needs a new shipment.

We sell auto accessories on Shopify from Pune and pay for seven apps: bundles, COD verification, pincode checker, GST invoices, reviews, WhatsApp notifications and loyalty. The monthly app bill keeps climbing and the store is slow. Would one custom app replacing some of these make sense, and which ones?

Replacing four of the seven makes sense: the pincode checker, COD verification rules, GST invoices and bundles are simple logic specific to how you sell, and one custom app can run them with a single storefront script. Keep reviews and loyalty, which are mature products, and keep WhatsApp with its provider but trigger messages from the custom app. Compare the build plus hosting and maintenance against two or three years of cancelled subscriptions. Where is a custom Shopify app built by WavX Solutions hosted, and who controls it?

A custom Shopify app's server code is not hosted by Shopify; it runs on a cloud account, and WavX deploys on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure with CI/CD, monitoring and backups. The client owns 100% of the source code and IP, so the repository and cloud account can sit under the client's own name, with the app installed only on the client's store. That arrangement means another developer can take over the app later without WavX's involvement. Source

Mera skincare brand Shopify pe hai aur mahine ke 300 orders aate hain. Ab subscription aur loyalty points add karna chahta hoon. Yeh Shopify app se ho jayega ya custom banwana padega?

300 orders ke level pe pehle ready Shopify apps aazmaiye; subscription aur points dono ke liye apps milte hain aur jaldi lag jate hain. Custom tab banwaiye jab app ke rules aapke kaam ke na hon, jaise points ka online aur offline dono jagah chalna, apne hisaab ki expiry, ya app ki monthly fees orders ke saath bahut badh rahi ho. Custom private app mein rules aapke hote hain aur data aapke paas rehta hai. WavX private Shopify apps aur loyalty systems dono banata hai. Source

My freelancer built a custom app for my Shopify store two years ago and has now stopped responding. The app still runs, but I have no idea where the code lives or who pays for the server. How do I find out what I have and get control of it?

Start in your Shopify admin: the apps section shows the custom app, its permissions and the URL it calls, and that URL reveals where it is hosted. Then check your own card and email for a cloud or hosting bill; if there is none, the freelancer's account is paying and the app can stop without warning. Ask in writing for the repository and hosting to be transferred. If nothing comes back, a developer can document what the app does from its behaviour and rebuild it under your accounts. Source

Our Shopify store was built eight months ago. Since then a theme update wiped a custom section, an app update broke the cart drawer, and a discount stacked wrongly during a sale. Nobody owns the store day to day. What should a maintenance arrangement cover so this stops?

All three incidents come from changes going live untested, so the arrangement should centre on change control. Keep the theme in version control with a duplicate theme for testing, so updates are reviewed before publishing. Check app updates on that copy. Before every sale, test discount combinations with real carts. Add a monthly check of checkout, tracking and speed, a log of what changed and when, and one named contact for urgent problems. WavX's post-launch support covers monitoring, updates, enhancements and emergency help. Source

Shopify app store app vs custom app when to build your own?

Use an App Store app when the need is common, such as reviews, email or basic upsells, and build your own when the logic is specific to your business. Signs that a custom app is due: you pay for several apps that overlap, an app slows the storefront, you bend your process to fit the app's settings, data must flow into your own systems, or no app does the job. A custom app runs only on your store and its code can belong to you. Source

How do subscriptions work on Shopify — is it built in or do I need an app?

Subscriptions on Shopify need an app, either Shopify's own subscription app, a third-party one, or a custom app built on Shopify's subscription APIs. The app attaches selling plans to products, such as deliver every month at a set discount. Customers still pay through the normal Shopify checkout, and the app then handles renewals, skips, pauses, failed-payment retries and a customer portal. Your payment gateway must support stored payment methods for recurring charges, which is the first thing to confirm. Source

What are the hard limits of Shopify that custom development cannot work around?

A few limits are fixed whatever a developer does. The checkout engine is Shopify's and cannot be replaced or self-hosted, only extended within what each plan allows. URL patterns such as /products/ and /collections/ cannot be changed. There is no direct database access, so everything goes through throttled APIs. Theme code cannot run server-side logic of its own, and there is a cap on variants per product. Most other gaps can be closed with a custom app, Shopify Functions or a headless front end. Source
