Description
Service Shopify conversion rate optimisation for Indian stores
Shopify counts a cash-on-delivery order as a conversion the moment it is placed, whether or not it is ever delivered and paid. Conversion work on an Indian Shopify store therefore starts by measuring delivered orders, then removes friction in a fixed order: costs shown late, payment methods, COD rules, checkout fields, speed. WavX diagnoses and makes the changes. It does not promise an uplift.

Measure delivered orders, not placed orders
Shopify defines conversion rate as the percentage of sessions that resulted in a purchase. Its conversion rate breakdown report shows the funnel in four steps: all sessions, sessions with cart additions, sessions that reached checkout, and sessions that completed checkout.
For a store that takes cash on delivery, the last step hides a problem. A COD order completes checkout, so Shopify counts it. Shopify records COD as a manual payment, and an order paid that way stays unpaid until someone marks it paid. If the parcel is refused or the customer cannot be reached, it comes back as a return to origin (RTO). The store has paid for shipping in both directions and the conversion still shows in the report.
This changes what "improving conversion" means. A change that brings in more COD orders can raise the conversion rate and lower the money collected. So the first piece of work is a better number:
orders delivered and paid, per 100 sessions
split by prepaid and COD
with RTO counted against the day the order was placed
Getting there means joining Shopify's orders to the courier's delivery status, which the Shopify and Shiprocket integration page describes for one common setup.

What your plan lets you change at checkout
Checkout is where merchants most want to change things and where Shopify allows least. As of October 2026:
Change
Basic, Grow, Advanced
Plus
Checkout form options in settings: contact method, phone number field
Yes
Apps on the information, shipping and payment steps
No
Apps on the Thank you and Order status pages
Hide, rename or reorder payment methods with a payment customisation Function
Through a public App Store app
Through a public app or a custom app
A/B experiments on themes and checkout configurations with Rollouts
Grow and Advanced
The fourth row matters most for COD. A payment customisation Function can hide, rename or move a payment method based on the cart total, customer data such as tags and purchase history, and the delivery address. That is how "no COD above a set order value" or "no COD for this customer tag" is done inside Shopify's own checkout. Stores on any plan can use public apps that contain Functions; only Plus stores can run a custom app that contains one. A store can have up to 25 payment customisation Functions active.
Checkout products from payment companies are another route. Razorpay's Magic Checkout, for example, lists Shopify among its supported platforms and says it can prevent customers with past RTO behaviour from placing COD orders and filter out COD orders with incomplete addresses. Those are the vendor's descriptions. Before adopting one, ask how its orders reach Shopify, what it does to your analytics and pixels, and what leaving it would involve.
What can be built on each plan is covered under Shopify checkout customisation .
The COD and RTO loop
These steps are ordered by cost, cheapest first. Each one trades some orders for better orders, so each should be read against delivered orders, not placed ones.
Require the phone number. One setting. It applies when checkout includes a shipping step.
Confirm COD orders before dispatch. A WhatsApp message asking the customer to confirm, with unconfirmed orders held. The WhatsApp Business API sends the message; Shopify Flow, a free automation app on all four plans, is the usual place for the tag-and-hold rule.
Make prepaid the better deal. A small prepaid discount or free shipping on prepaid, shown on the product page and in the cart, not only at the payment step.
Restrict COD by rule. By order value, by customer history, by delivery area. This is the payment customisation described above.
Read the returns monthly. Which products, which areas, which campaigns. A product whose photos mislead will return whatever the checkout does.
A diagnostic checklist
No uplift is attached to any item here. It is the list WavX works through to find where a store's loss actually is.
Open the conversion rate breakdown report and write down the four funnel numbers for the last 30 days, mobile and desktop separately.
Work out delivered-and-paid orders for the same period, split by prepaid and COD.
Place a test order on a mid-range phone on mobile data. Count the screens, the fields and the seconds.
Note the first point at which the full price, with shipping and any COD charge, is visible.
List the payment methods shown and their order. Check that each one completes.
Check the phone number setting and whether COD orders are confirmed before dispatch.
Read Shopify's web performance report for the product and collection pages.
Check whether abandoned-checkout reminders are being sent, and what they say.
Read twenty recent RTO orders one by one. Look for a pattern in product, area, order value and time of day.
Read the on-site search terms that returned no results.

How WavX works on it
Instrument. Shopify's funnel, Google Analytics 4 events and delivery status brought into one view.
Diagnose. The checklist above, written up with the evidence for each finding.
Order the fixes. By how much of the loss each one addresses and what it costs, with your plan's limits stated.
Change one thing at a time. Where traffic allows, as a Rollouts experiment: Shopify's default is a 50/50 split with an end date 90 days out. Where it does not, as a dated change.
Read the result on delivered orders. And say so plainly when a change made no difference.
Limits
No uplift is promised. A diagnostic finds problems. Whether fixing them moves the number depends on things outside the store, including the product, the price and who the ads bring in.
Small stores cannot A/B test their way to answers. A test needs enough orders in each version to tell a real difference from noise. Below that, apply the known fixes and watch the funnel.
Rollouts has its own limits. Shopify states that Liquid templates cannot be changed as part of a rollout and that rollouts cannot be applied to vintage themes.
Below Plus, the checkout steps are fixed. The work happens before checkout, in the settings Shopify exposes, and after the order.
Baymard's figures are not Indian data. They are used above for the ranking of reasons, not for the size of the effect on your store.
When you should not pay for this
If the store takes a few orders a day, the three guides linked above are enough to work through alone, and the money is better spent on product pages and photography. If traffic comes mainly from ads aimed at the wrong audience, the funnel will look broken whatever is changed on the site; fix the targeting first. And if returns are driven by the product not matching its listing, no checkout rule will repair that.
Frequently asked questions
How much will my conversion rate improve?
Nobody can tell you that honestly before the work is done, and we do not put a number on it. What we can show is where the funnel loses the most sessions, what was changed, and what the numbers did afterwards, measured on delivered orders.
Should I remove cash on delivery to cut returns?
Usually not outright. COD brings orders from buyers who will not pay in advance, so removing it trades returns for lost sales. The more useful steps are confirming COD orders before dispatch, requiring a phone number, making prepaid the better deal, and restricting COD by rule for the orders that return most.
Can the Shopify checkout be customised without Shopify Plus?
Partly. On every plan you can change checkout form options, add apps to the Thank you and Order status pages, and use App Store apps that hide, rename or reorder payment methods. Apps that add to the information, shipping and payment steps are available to Shopify Plus stores only, as of October 2026.
Can I run A/B tests on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify's Rollouts feature can run an experiment between two themes or checkout configurations, and experiments are available on the Grow plan or higher as of October 2026. A test only tells you something if each version receives enough orders, so low-traffic stores are better served by fixing known problems and watching the funnel.
How is this priced?
It is quoted after scoping. A diagnostic on its own is a short fixed piece of work; the changes that follow depend on what it finds and on your Shopify plan.
