Description
Service Shopify speed optimisation
On Shopify the hosting is not yours to tune, so speed work is about what the store loads: theme code, installed apps and third-party scripts. WavX measures real-user Core Web Vitals first, removes or defers what is not earning its place, fixes the theme, and reports the same measurements afterwards. No score is promised in advance.

Measure before anything is changed
"Slow" needs a number, and the right number comes from real visitors, not from a single test.
Google's Core Web Vitals are the three measurements used:
Metric
What it measures
Good
Poor
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
How long the main content takes to appear
2.5 seconds or less
Over 4 seconds
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
How quickly the page responds to a tap
200 milliseconds or less
Over 500 milliseconds
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
How much the page jumps while loading
0.1 or less
Over 0.25
Google assesses each at the 75th percentile of page loads, so a store passes when three out of four visits are good, not when the owner's own phone feels fast.
There are three places to read them, and they do not agree with each other for good reasons.

What it shows
Use it for
Shopify admin web performance reports
Real-user data from the store's visitors on Chromium-based browsers and Firefox, by page type, by URL and over time. Delayed by up to 36 hours; kept for 90 days
The baseline, and seeing which page type is the problem
PageSpeed Insights, field data
Chrome users' real experience over the previous 28 days
What Google sees
PageSpeed Insights, lab data (Lighthouse)
One simulated load
Finding causes. Not a target in itself
WavX records all three before touching the store. If the field data is already good and only the Lighthouse score is low, there may be little worth paying for, and WavX says so.
What you control on Shopify
General advice on why a website is slow talks about hosting, server location and caching plugins. Little of that applies here. Shopify runs the servers and serves theme assets and images from its own CDN. What the merchant controls, in Shopify's own words, is the theme, the installed apps, and any third-party code added to the store, including tag managers and the tags inside them.
That narrows the work usefully. Shopify speed optimisation is an audit of what the store loads, followed by removing, deferring or rewriting it.
Where the time goes, and the fix for each
Cause
How it is found
Fix
Kind of work
Apps that load scripts on every page, including pages where they do nothing
Network trace by domain; list of installed apps against what each is used for
Remove unused apps; limit the rest to the templates that need them
App review
Code left behind by uninstalled apps
Searching theme files for snippets and script tags that belong to no installed app
Delete it. Apps built as theme app extensions do not edit theme code, so this is mostly a legacy of older installs
Theme change
A large hero image, or a hero image that is lazy-loaded
LCP element in the lab report
Output through image_url and image_tag at the right sizes; never lazy-load the image at the top of the page; mark it high priority
Fonts and files loaded from other domains
Network trace
Host them in the theme's assets on Shopify's CDN
Scripts that block the first paint
Lab report
Add defer to anything not needed immediately
Tag manager full of old tags
Tag manager audit
Remove unused and low-value tags; move tracking to pixels under Customer events, which run in a sandbox
Tracking change
Too many sections on one template
Counting them. Shopify allows up to 25 per template and advises limiting them
Merge or remove sections; move secondary content to its own page
Theme editor
Very long collection pages
Page weight on collection templates
Turn on pagination
Theme setting
Animations, carousels, autoplay video
Comparing metrics with each switched off
Keep the ones that earn their cost
Layout that jumps as banners, widgets or images arrive
CLS sources in the lab report
Reserve the space; set image dimensions
Slow Liquid rendering
Shopify Theme Inspector for Chrome
Rewrite the heavy loops and lookups
The cause that is easiest to overlook is accumulation: an app tried for a month and never removed, a tracking tag from a campaign that ended, a chat widget on every page of a store that answers chat on WhatsApp.
How WavX runs speed work
Baseline. Field and lab data for the home, collection, product and cart pages, on mobile. Screenshots are kept so the after-report compares like with like.
Inventory. Every app, every third-party script and every tag, with what it costs to load and who in the business uses it.
Decide with the owner. For each item: keep, restrict to certain pages, replace, or remove. This is a business decision, not a technical one. A reviews widget that slows the product page may still be worth it.
Work on a duplicate theme. Nothing is changed on the live theme until the copy has been tested.
Fix in order of effect. Removals first, then how images and scripts load, then the theme's own code.
Publish and measure. Lab results the same day; Shopify's reports within days; Google's field data after its 28-day window has turned over.
Report. The same measurements as the baseline, a list of what was changed, and a list of what was left and why.
Keep it fast. A short rule for the team: what to check before installing an app. For stores with a code repository, Shopify's Lighthouse CI action can test each theme change automatically.
Ongoing checks can be part of Shopify maintenance and support .
What speed work cannot do
It cannot change Shopify's servers or checkout. Those are Shopify's.
It cannot make a heavy app light. The choices are to load it later, load it on fewer pages, replace it or remove it.
It cannot promise a score, a ranking or a conversion rate. Lighthouse scores vary between runs, and rankings and sales depend on much more than speed.
It cannot show up in Google's field data overnight. The 28-day window has to pass.
It does not last by itself. The next three apps installed without a check will undo it.
When you do not need to hire anyone
Start with the free steps, which an owner can do without a developer:
Open the web performance report in the Shopify admin and see which page type is rated poor.
Uninstall apps nobody has used this quarter.
Re-upload the home page banner at a sensible size and check it is not a video.
Remove old tags from the tag manager.
Update the theme if a newer version is available.
The general guide on how to speed up your website covers image and script basics that apply to any site. If the numbers are still poor after these steps, the remaining causes are usually in theme code, and that is developer work. The slow Shopify store page is a shorter diagnosis to read first.
It is also worth knowing when optimisation is the wrong purchase. A theme that is several years old, heavily edited and no longer receiving updates can cost more to repair than to replace. In that case WavX will recommend a current theme or a custom theme and say why.
Cost
Shopify speed work is quoted after the baseline, because the baseline shows how much there is to do. WavX's published guide on speeding up a website prints ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 for a basic audit and implementation on a small business website. That is a planning range, not a quote; a Shopify store with many apps and a heavily edited theme will differ. Speed work that is part of search performance more broadly sits under Core Web Vitals optimisation .
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Shopify store slow when Shopify hosts it?
Because hosting is rarely the problem. Shopify names three things that affect a store's speed: the theme, the installed apps, and third-party code you have added, including tag managers. Each app and script adds work for the shopper's phone, and that is where the time goes.
What score will you get my store to?
We do not promise a score. A Lighthouse number is a lab test on one simulated device, and Google's own documentation explains why it fluctuates between runs. We report real-user Core Web Vitals before and after, and we tell you which remaining cost comes from an app or script you have chosen to keep.
Do I need a new theme to make the store faster?
Not usually as a first step. Removing unused apps, cleaning leftover code and fixing how images and scripts load costs far less than a rebuild and addresses two of the three causes Shopify names. A new theme is worth considering when the current one is old, heavily edited and no longer updated.
Will a faster store rank higher or convert better?
It may help, and nobody can promise it. Shopify says better web performance can improve shopping experience, discoverability and conversion, but speed is one factor among many. We treat speed work as removing a known obstacle, not as a ranking or revenue promise.
How long before the improvement shows in Google's data?
Lab tests show a change the same day. Google's field data in PageSpeed Insights covers the previous 28 days of real visits, so it takes about four weeks to reflect a fix fully. Shopify's own web performance reports update sooner, with a delay of up to 36 hours.
