Description

Service Shopify store maintenance and support

Shopify runs the servers, so maintenance on a Shopify store is not patching. It is keeping custom code, apps and integrations working while the platform changes: a new API version every quarter, features retired on fixed dates, theme updates that skip edited code. WavX offers a monthly plan covering that upkeep, small changes and fixes. Price and response times are agreed per engagement, not published.

Discuss a Shopify requirement Last updated 2 October 2026

Why a hosted store still needs maintenance

Shopify hosts the store and serves it through a CDN. Nobody patches a server. What does need looking after is everything that is specific to your store, because the platform under it keeps moving.

What changes

What Shopify documents

Why someone has to act

API versions

A new version every three months. Each stable version is supported for at least 12 months. An app calling a version that is no longer accessible is answered with the oldest version that is

Custom apps and integrations must be moved to a supported version at least once a year, or they start receiving responses they were not written for

Retired features

Shopify Scripts were deactivated on 30 June 2026. The deadline to upgrade the Thank you and Order status pages was 26 August 2026. Script tags will stop being injected into storefronts on 1 March 2027

Each retirement has a date. Code that depends on the old feature stops on that date

The REST Admin API

A legacy API since 1 October 2024

Older custom apps and integrations built on it need a plan to move to the GraphQL Admin API

Theme updates

Updates are released from time to time. Code edits are carried over only when they do not conflict; when they do, the edits have to be copied to the new version by hand. Automatic updates cover bugs and security only

A customised theme falls behind unless someone merges the changes

Apps

Some apps add code to the theme that is not removed when the app is uninstalled. Uninstalling does not cancel charges an app bills outside Shopify

Leftover code slows pages, and forgotten subscriptions keep billing

Performance

Shopify's web performance reports show Core Web Vitals from real visitors, with markers for app installs, theme updates and new code

Speed drifts as apps and scripts are added. Someone has to read the report and trace the change

If your store used Scripts, the Scripts to Functions migration guide covers what replaced them.

What a monthly plan includes

Area

What is done

When

Safe changes

Every change is made on a duplicate of the live theme, or on a branch connected through Shopify's GitHub integration, then published. A store can hold up to 20 themes, so old copies are cleared

Every change

Deprecation watch

Shopify's developer changelog and the notices in your admin are checked against your theme, apps and integrations

Monthly

Custom app and integration upkeep

API version upgrades, failed webhooks, expiring credentials, error logs

Each quarterly API release, and as errors appear

App review

Installed apps listed with what each costs and does; unused apps removed, along with the code they left in the theme

Quarterly

Performance check

The web performance report read for the home, collection and product pages; any regression traced to the change that caused it

Small changes

Banners, sale collections, section and copy changes, new landing pages from existing sections

On request, within the agreed hours

Fixes

Faults in the theme, checkout additions, custom apps and integrations

As reported

Report

What was done, what is coming from Shopify, hours used

The plan is sized by three things: how much custom code the store has, how many integrations money or stock depends on, and how many small changes you ask for in a typical month. The general terms are on the support and maintenance page.

How requests are handled

One channel. Requests come to one place, in writing, so nothing depends on who saw a message.

Each request is given a severity. The store cannot take orders; something is broken but orders continue; a change is wanted.

The response target follows the severity. WavX does not publish a response-time or uptime commitment. The targets are written into each engagement, within working hours of Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM IST.

Sale periods are planned. If you need someone available outside those hours during a sale, it is scoped in advance, not assumed.

Every change is recorded. What was changed, in which theme or app, and how to reverse it.

Whoever you hire, ask the same questions: who is the named person, what are the hours, what counts as urgent, what happens to unused hours, and how the arrangement ends.

Access and ownership

Shopify's collaborator access lets an outside developer work in your admin. You share a request code, the developer requests the permissions the work needs, and you approve or reject it. Collaborators do not count towards the store's user limit, and you can limit a collaborator's role to specific permissions, apps and channels.

Everything else stays in your company's name: the Shopify account, the payment gateway, the domain, the app subscriptions, and the repository that holds any custom code. A maintenance provider who holds those for you is a risk, not a convenience.

What it costs

WavX does not publish a monthly price for Shopify maintenance. It is quoted after scoping, as a fixed monthly fee, time and materials, or a mix; the engagement models page explains each.

For budgeting, two WavX guides print planning ranges. They are market figures, not a WavX quote.

Planning range

Figure

Where it is printed

Annual maintenance contract

15% to 20% of the initial build cost per year

Shopify store setup cost in India

Basic support retainer for an emerging brand

About ₹25,000 per month

The same guide

Monthly retainer covering ongoing conversion work and maintenance

₹75,000 to ₹3 lakh per month

Maintenance of a custom app

15% to 25% of the build cost per year

Shopify's plan fee, app subscriptions and gateway fees are separate and paid to those providers.

What maintenance is not

New features. A product builder, a loyalty scheme or a new integration is a project with its own scope. See custom Shopify feature development .

A redesign. Changing sections and copy is maintenance. A new theme is not.

Marketing operations. Uploading products, writing descriptions and running campaigns are your team's work, though a plan can include hours for it if you ask.

A fix for a store that is already failing. If pages are slow or orders are going missing today, that is diagnosed and repaired first. Start with why a Shopify store is slow if speed is the complaint.

When you do not need a retainer

A store on an unedited Theme Store theme, with a few well-known apps and no custom app or integration, is maintained by Shopify and by the app developers. Pay for changes one job at a time when you need them, and check the web performance report yourself once a month.

A retainer earns its place when the store has custom code, an integration that orders, stock or accounts depend on, or a steady flow of changes. Below that, it is money spent on being available.

Maintenance is one part of Shopify and app development at WavX.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify is hosted. Why would my store need maintenance?

Because the parts that are yours keep ageing while the platform moves. Shopify releases a new API version every three months and supports each for at least 12 months, retires features on announced dates, and updates themes in ways that customised code can block. A store with custom apps, integrations or an edited theme needs someone watching those.

What response time do you commit to?

We do not publish a response-time or uptime commitment. Response targets are agreed in writing for each engagement, by severity, within our working hours of Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM IST. If you need cover outside those hours, for a sale for example, raise it before the plan starts so it can be scoped.

How much does a Shopify maintenance plan cost?

It is quoted after scoping, because the cost follows how much custom code and how many integrations the store has. For budgeting, our Shopify cost guide prints market planning ranges: annual maintenance at 15% to 20% of the build cost, and a basic support retainer at about ₹25,000 a month for an emerging brand.

Can you maintain a store another developer or agency built?

Yes. The first month starts with a review of the theme code, the installed apps, any custom apps and the integrations, so that we know what we are taking on and you know what state it is in. Anything that should be fixed before it can be maintained is listed separately.

Do you need my admin password?

No. Shopify has collaborator access for outside developers: you share a request code, we request only the permissions the work needs, and you approve it. You can remove the access at any time.
