Description

Service Website maintenance

Website maintenance is the routine work that keeps a live site secure, working and fast: security updates, backups, certificate and domain renewals, monitoring, and small fixes. WavX budgets it at 15 to 25% of the build cost per year as a planning range, and audits a site it did not build before quoting. Hosting and third-party subscriptions are billed separately by their providers.

What website maintenance covers

A website is software running on other software: a framework, a runtime, a server, a certificate, a domain and a set of third-party services. Each of those changes on its own schedule. Maintenance is the work of keeping up with them so the site does not quietly break.

Area

What is done

Why it cannot be skipped

Framework and library updates

Security patches and version upgrades applied and tested

Unsupported versions stop receiving fixes

Runtime upgrades

The server runtime moved to a supported release before the old one ends

A framework patch may require a newer runtime

Backups

Database and uploaded files backed up off the server, and a restore tested

A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a backup

Certificates, domain and DNS

Renewals tracked; automatic certificate renewal checked

A lapsed certificate shows visitors a security warning

Monitoring

Availability checks and error logging, with someone reading the results

Otherwise customers report the fault, days later

Forms and integrations

Enquiry forms, payment flow, WhatsApp and CRM links tested

These fail silently when a provider changes an API

Tracking

Analytics and ad conversion events checked after each change

Broken tracking makes marketing spend unmeasurable

Performance

Page speed measured and regressions fixed

Sites slow down as content and scripts are added

Search hygiene

Broken links, redirect errors and Search Console warnings cleared

Small errors accumulate into lost pages

Small changes

Text, images, a new section, a minor fix

The site keeps matching the business

Access

Accounts kept in your company's name; old logins removed

Former staff and vendors should not hold keys

Three of these have dates attached that are worth knowing, as of October 2026.

Framework support windows. A site built on Next.js is on a line with a published support policy. Version 16 is Active LTS, version 15 is in Maintenance LTS, and versions 14 and earlier are unsupported. The September 2026 security release shipped its fixes in 16.3.8 and 15.5.27. The release post lists no patch for version 13 or 14. Next.js also published a security release in August 2026, so patching is a recurring job and not an occasional one.

Runtime support windows. Node.js lists versions 22 and 24 as LTS and version 20 as end-of-life. Its documentation says LTS status typically means critical bugs are fixed for a total of 30 months. A site deployed two or three years ago is probably on a runtime that is at or near the end of that window.

Certificate lifetimes. Let's Encrypt, a widely used free certificate authority, issues default certificates valid for 90 days and recommends renewing every 60 days. Renewal is automated on most hosts, and the automation is exactly the kind of thing that fails unnoticed after a server change.

On performance, Google's Core Web Vitals give the thresholds to hold: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less. If a site is already failing these, the fix is a project in its own right: Core Web Vitals optimisation .

What maintenance does not cover

Being clear about the boundary avoids most disputes.

New features. A booking system, a customer login or a new integration is a build, scoped and priced separately.

A redesign. New layouts or a new platform is a website redesign .

Content marketing and SEO campaigns. Writing articles and building rankings is a different service.

Advertising. Running campaigns is separate, though maintenance keeps the tracking working.

Hosting and subscriptions. These are billed by the providers. Maintenance manages them; it does not pay for them.

What it costs

WavX budgets maintenance at 15 to 25% of the build cost per year. That band is published in the guide to app maintenance cost per year in India , and WavX applies the same band to websites and web applications. It is a planning range, not a quote.

Build cost of the site

15% per year

25% per year

₹50,000

₹7,500

₹12,500

₹1,50,000

₹22,500

₹37,500

₹4,50,000

₹67,500

₹1,12,500

₹9,00,000

₹1,35,000

₹2,25,000

The table is arithmetic on the published band, shown so you can place your own site. Where a site falls inside the band depends on a few things:

Toward 15%

Toward 25%

Mostly static pages

Logins, payments, a database

Few third-party integrations

Several integrations, each with its own API changes

Content changes a few times a year

Weekly content and layout changes

Recently built on supported versions

Behind on upgrades, with a backlog to clear

A very small static site can cost less than 15% to keep healthy, and WavX will say so. A site WavX did not build is quoted after an audit, with no published figure, because the cost depends on the state of the code. If the build cost is unknown, the software cost estimator gives a planning range for rebuilding the same system, which is a fair base for the percentage.

Engagements are fixed price, time and materials, or a hybrid. How support is structured across WavX services is on the support and maintenance page.

How a maintenance engagement starts

Access and inventory. WavX lists what exists: repository, hosting, domain, DNS, certificate, database, backups, and every third-party service with its renewal date and account owner.

Baseline audit. Versions in use against their support windows, backup and restore, error logs, page speed, and forms tested end to end.

Urgent fixes. Anything unsafe is fixed first: unsupported versions, missing backups, credentials held by people who have left.

Written scope. What is covered, what is not, how requests are raised and how changes outside the scope are priced.

Regular cycle. Updates, checks and small changes on an agreed rhythm, with a short written note of what was done.

For a site WavX built, the first two steps are already known and the engagement starts at step four. For an inherited site where the previous developer is unreachable, start with what to secure when a developer leaves . If the audit shows the code is unsafe or cannot be updated, the work becomes a software rescue before it can become maintenance.

When you do not need a maintenance plan

The site is on a hosted platform. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and similar services patch and host the platform themselves. You still need someone to look after content, apps and tracking, but not servers and frameworks. For Shopify stores, see Shopify maintenance and support .

The site is a few static pages that never change. A yearly check of the domain, certificate and form may be enough. Put the renewal dates in a calendar you own.

You have a developer in-house. Maintenance is routine work a competent developer can do, given time set aside for it. The risk is that it never gets that time.

The site needs replacing. Paying to maintain a site that no longer serves the business delays the real decision. If every change is slow and risky, price a rebuild against two years of upkeep.

Frequently asked questions

How much does website maintenance cost in India?

As a planning range we budget 15 to 25% of the build cost per year, the band published in our maintenance cost guide. On a site that cost ₹1,50,000 to build, that is ₹22,500 to ₹37,500 a year. A small static site can need less, and a site with payments or logins sits toward the top. The actual figure is quoted after we see the site.

Do you maintain websites you did not build?

It depends on what the site is built with. We work in React, Next.js, Node.js and Python. We audit the code and hosting first, and tell you after the audit whether we are the right team and what it would cost. If the site is on another stack, we will say so before taking the work.

Is hosting included in maintenance?

No. Hosting, the domain, and third-party services such as email, SMS and payment gateways are billed to you by their providers, on accounts in your company's name. Maintenance covers the work of keeping them configured and renewed.

What happens if we do nothing?

For a while, nothing visible. Then a certificate or domain lapses, a form stops delivering leads, or a known security hole in an unpatched framework is used against the site. Fixing a backlog under pressure costs more than the routine work would have.

Do you commit to a response time or uptime figure?

We do not publish a response-time or uptime figure. Uptime depends largely on the hosting provider you choose, which we do not control. What the maintenance scope includes, and how to reach us, is written down before the engagement starts.
